A headline pay rate is only the start of an offer. Your take-home pay also depends on which miles count, whether bonuses are conditional and what comes out before you are paid. Before accepting a driving job, ask the carrier to explain each part in writing so you can compare like with like.
1. Separate base pay from bonuses
Ask which part of the advertised rate is the base rate and which part depends on mileage, safety, fuel, attendance or other conditions. Find out when each bonus is calculated and paid. For a percentage-based offer, ask what revenue the percentage is applied to and which charges are excluded. A weekly illustration is useful only when its assumptions are clear.
Use an ordinary week as well as a strong week. Ask what happens when freight is slow, a truck is in the shop or a receiver keeps you waiting. Confirm the policies for detention, layover, breakdowns, orientation and any minimum-pay arrangement. Do not assume that an advertised maximum is a guaranteed weekly amount.
2. Ask what every deduction covers
Company-driver and lease-purchase arrangements have different cost structures. Ask for an itemized list that applies to the actual role you are considering. It may include equipment payments, insurance, maintenance reserves, escrow or other charges. For each one, ask how it is calculated, when it is taken and whether it can change.
For a reserve or deposit, ask who holds it, what it can be used for, how you can see its balance and what happens when the agreement ends. Ask about refund conditions and timing. If a deduction is unclear, get it explained before signing instead of relying on a verbal estimate.
3. Check which miles are paid
Ask whether loaded and empty miles use the same rate, how paid mileage is calculated and what happens when routing changes. Clarify the dispatch policy and any conditions attached to declining a load. The useful answer describes the role’s actual policy, not just “we pay for miles.”
4. Read the exit terms too
Review notice requirements, equipment-return instructions and any repayment or early-termination provisions. Keep a copy of the offer and every agreement you sign. If you do not understand a contractual obligation, get an explanation or independent advice before committing.
